Six ideas for family photos that we love

· Family,Tips and Hints

Family photos are a great way to memorialise how your family grows and develops together over the years. If you’re anything like us, you’ll have thousands of photos – many of which are similar to one another. To keep your photos fresh and fun, we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite ideas for family photos.

Make it candid

Some of the best photos come out of moments we lose ourselves in. Setting up a situation that lends to candid snaps is always a winner – especially with kids. Telling stories can help bring out the mood you’d like to capture. Think about telling a funny story to make people laugh, or an emotional story about when your child was born, to help the photographer capture the raw emotion of the situation.

Go to your favourite place

Other ideas for family photos include going on location. The background of a photo plays a huge role in creating the mood. Visiting some of your family’s favourite places together will make for a sentimental photo. It could be a holiday destination, the local park or even the cubbyhouse in your backyard – if the location is somewhere familiar and full of lovely memories, these will come out in the photos.

Do an activity together

One of the easiest ways to keep the kids engaged during a photoshoot is to have them do an activity. Maybe it’s building sandcastles, maybe it’s climbing up a tree – having a fun activity to do during your shoot will give your photos an adventurous, free-spirited feel.

Consider the angles

You don’t need to go over-the-top to create something special. Sometimes, the best ideas for family photos are the simplest ones. Instead of taking photos front-on, think about how the angle can make for a more interesting shot. If there’s a special moment in the lounge room, have your family lie on the floor with their heads turned into each other and take the photo from above. If you’re having a superhero-themed shoot, take a low-angle shot looking up at your kids to make them appear powerful. Changing the angles will help mix up everyday situation to create photos that you love.

Have a theme

If you’re after ideas for family photos that are a bit different, consider having a themed photoshoot. Consider themes that match the ages of your children, from allowing them to dress up as their favourite superheros as little kids, to wearing the uniform of their soccer team when they start playing sport, themed photoshoots can help capture the spirit of the age of your children.
